Hi, Steve,

I just wanted to congratulate you on JP119, another superb issue. Ben Valkhoff’s interview with Catharina was gold dust, a real insight into a largely unknown chapter in Jimi’s life, and one which had a real impact on his songwriting. Along with the Margaret Redding interview it reminded me how rarely we hear from the people who were really close to Jimi in his short life.

I also really enjoyed Gordon’s articles, including his further reflections on Songs for Groovy Children. I think he really gets to the heart of the tension many Jimpress readers feel between the dedicated fan’s desire for a complete “warts and all” collection and an edited set which presents Jimi’s best performances in a way that might appeal to the widest range of music listeners. I love Songs for Groovy Children and believe Experience Hendrix got the editorial choices absolutely right on this occasion, particularly in preserving the sequence of the original concerts (unlike the bewildering approach to the Winterland set!). I have listened to the circulating collector’s tapes of the complete 31 Dec 1969 evening concert many times and always found it a slightly depressing and disappointing experience. The removal of five sub-par songs from that concert on the EH box set improves the set to the extent that I can now really enjoy that concert as much as the other three. I believe nevertheless that EH should have included a short note in the booklet to explain precisely what was removed from the two evening concerts.

Like you, I am looking forward to the Philip Norman biography, albeit with a little trepidation. He’s an excellent writer, but the extracts from the book which were serialised in the Daily Mail early this month were typical sensationalist fare, concentrating on Jimi’s sex life and the mystery surrounding his death. I didn’t see any evidence of major new research such as that which Charles R. Cross delivered a decade or so ago, but I’m still hoping to be proved wrong.

Stay safe in these interesting times!

Best wishes

David

Can't wait to read Ben's article!

Despite only down the road from JP Towers I have yet to receive my copy!

Thanks for the kind words Fred, nice to get a little comment back.

Now back to my Royal Mail voodoo doll, if you'll excuse me ..........................

Although on this weeks evidence I would probably have arrived without a copy of JP!

Well now.

A square wheeled cart was drawn down the road, low and behold it was Royal Mail. Safely delivering Jimpress #119.

I noted a Warrington post code on the back as it slowly clattered its way off in the vague direction of the "south".

Great article Ben, wonderful surprise and fascinating read. So nice of Catherina to be so open with her memories, beautiful, thank you.

Lots of reading to do later but first I'm off to feed the roses as Royal Mail delivered a ton of horse poo as per usual!
